This lecture reflects on SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, the sixth Chicago Architecture Biennial, as a platform for reconsidering the relationship between architectural practice and critical theory after postmodernism. Drawing on the conceptual triangle of realism, autonomy, and fiction, it argues that these are no longer opposing positions but interdependent modes through which architecture can engage an increasingly fragmented and unstable world. Rather than proposing a new manifesto, the lecture examines how contemporary architectural practices are redefining disciplinary agendas through plural forms of knowledge, ecological thinking, collective action, and expanded modes of representation. Through the projects, research, and curatorial strategies developed for SHIFT, it offers a series of observations toward a renewed theoretical framework—one grounded not in universal certainties, but in architecture’s capacity to negotiate complexity, produce meaning, and imagine new forms of agency.
This lecture will be moderated by Miranda Lash, acclaimed curator of contemporary art.

As hazards like flooding, drought, and wildfire increasingly intersect with communities across the Intermountain West, there is a great and growing demand to leverage research to support resilience to hazards at the local, state, and regional scale. To meet this need, the Western Water Assessment team works directly with partners in hazard management spaces to understand their needs and conduct research that is usable in their decision making process. In this lecture, Dr. Bjarke will speak about ongoing and successful research projects that have supported water resource monitoring and conservation in Colorado and across the Intermountain West. This presentation will focus on the process of building relationships with practitioners to ensure research is usable, the importance of connecting research to operations, and career pathways in hydroclimate research.
Nels Bjarke is a research scientist with the Western Water Assessment who focuses on leveraging hydrology and climate research to support hazard resilience across the Intermountain West. Nels works with municipalities, state agencies, and regional research organizations to understand how scientific tools and methods can meet the needs of resource managers and emergency managers to prepare for current and projected climate hazards. Nels has an M.S. in Earth and Planetary Science from the University of New Mexico and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.

TERREMOTO is presently focused on how we might create omni-positive gardens and landscapes that are fair, just and generous in their relationships to labor, land, materials and ecology. Our studio believes that we find ourself at a civilizational fork in the road, and through deep internal self-examination of landscape history and methods of practice (including our own), we can re-orient the act of garden-making into one of radical empathy, ecology and kindness.
David Godshall is a landscape architect, horticultural theorist of sorts and the co-founder and principal of TERREMOTO, a thirty-person studio based in California. David believes that gardens and landscapes are acts of cultural production and thus wants garden-making to reflect an emerging culture of kindness, generosity and stewardship that pushes back against the broken world in which we find ourselves living and working. He received his MLA from UC Berkeley and likes to go on long sunrise walks with his dogs and friends.

Singapore is a high-density, multicultural, cosmopolitan city of approximately 6 million, located in South East Asia. With its modern infrastructure, spotless streets, lush greenery and well-coordinated state-led urban planning apparatus, it has earned a reputation as ‘an urban planner’s dream’. However, Singapore is not a dream, but a real city grappling with wicked problems and deep contradictions. Drawing from my on-going research and past work experience as a planner in Singapore, this lecture examines Singapore’s efforts at tackling familiar planning challenges, like residential ethnic segregation, housing affordability, and urban redevelopment, and unpacks their impacts on population health and social equity.
Shin Bin is an Assistant Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. Her research lies at the intersection between health and urban planning, and in particular on how built environment interventions and public policy can improve social equity and reduce health disparities. Previously, she worked as an urban planner at the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore. She obtained her PhD and Master in City Planning from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
