The Council of Chairs and Directors brings together CU Denver’s department chairs, program directors, and related academic unit leaders to strengthen communication, collaboration, peer learning, and shared problem-solving across schools and colleges. The Council serves as a forum where academic leaders can discuss common challenges, identify emerging issues, share effective practices, and provide faculty-informed perspectives on institutional priorities that affect academic units.
The Office of Faculty Affairs supports the Council through a Faculty Fellow who works with the AVC for Faculty Affairs and the Council Steering Committee.
The Faculty Fellow helps:
The Fellow serves as a liaison between OFA and the Council, working to enhance communication, collaboration, and professional development among department chairs, program directors, and similar academic leaders.

Hamilton Bean, PhD, MBA, APR is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver and serves as the 2026–27 Office of Faculty Affairs Faculty Fellow for the Council of Chairs and Directors. Since joining CU Denver in 2009, he has held multiple academic leadership roles, including Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning, Director of the International Studies Program, and the Communication Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Chair, Interim Chair, and Acting Chair. His leadership experience spans academic planning, curriculum development, program review, assessment, accreditation, faculty mentoring, student success, international education, and cross-campus collaboration.
As Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning (2026), Bean provided strategic leadership for academic planning and continuous improvement initiatives that advance CU Denver’s mission and goals. As department chair (since 2024), he works directly with the day-to-day realities of academic unit leadership, including workload, scheduling, personnel matters, curriculum, student concerns, budgets, and program development. This dual perspective informs his work with the Council of Chairs and Directors as a forum for shared understanding, practical problem-solving, peer support, and faculty-informed leadership across CU Denver’s schools and colleges.
Bean’s scholarship focuses on communication, security, public warning, organizational communication, and risk and crisis communication. He is the author of Mobile Technology and the Transformation of Public Alert and Warning, winner of the 2021 Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award from the National Communication Association, and Nimitz’s Newsman: Waldo Drake and the Navy’s Censored War in the Pacific. He has received research support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NOAA, the Japan Foundation, and other organizations, and he has served in international academic and accreditation roles, including as an external reviewer for the Commission for Academic Accreditation in the United Arab Emirates.
In his role as Faculty Fellow, Bean is especially interested in strengthening the Council as connective tissue among chairs, directors, the Office of Faculty Affairs, and the Provost’s Office. His work will focus on building community among academic leaders, identifying shared challenges, supporting practical tools and resources, and helping translate the experience of chairs and directors into institutional learning and better decision-making.
